Literacy Apps Week of January 30

Monday- I will give instructions on how to do an Acrostic. This will be the vocabulary writing activity for unit 9 . The final copy should be typed and turned in Tuesday or Wednesday. You only need to use 5 of the 10 words. Your rough draft will be turned in with the final copy. Onoy use  a person' name one time for each word.

Helpful HInts for Acrostic- All sentences should be 8 words or more. You may need lots of commas, use a dictionary or thesaurus if you can' t think of a beginning word,

Tuesday- Test - Unit 9. Brain pop on Shakespeare and introduction to the novel.

Wednesday/Thursday- We will read and listen to the tape for chapters 1-5.

Thursday/Friday- Open book test 1-5

Friday- Silent read

Week of January 30- LA classes

 Monday- HIghlight and work on organizer (you don't have this yet). Students will complete a freewrite. ( What will my life be like at age 30?)

Tuesday -Receive information on how to make notes on the printouts. ( Part of your grade). Continue  work from yesterday. Finish up any project  work  at home if behind.

 Coupon opportunity is to interview 3-5 people about your topic -if they are pro or con and the reasons why!This would  be part of your presentation.

 What should be included as notes on printouts .1. Underline in pencil the quotes that you are using,  2. In the orginial summaries , circle all words ann phrases  you are planning to change in your paraphrase, 3. To get ready for your presentation-rank your top 2-3 opinions or facts from each printout.

 Wednesday - Presentations and Debates. Don't forget about the chance to earn a coupon- interview 3-5 people about their opinion about your topic and why they take a pro or con stand. This would become part of your presentation.

Thursday- Hinky - Pinkys for warmup. We will learn about linking verbs ,predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Friday- Eggsbert (linking verbs) and a mini-quiz.

Literacy Apps- Week of January 23

Monday -complete a workpage which will be writing the draft of a creative short story using at least 7 words from unit 2. There will be a rubric. The final copy must be typed at home and turned in Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tuesday- Test will be given today for unit 2. There will be matching, fill in the blanks and a short answer writing question. (Like you did for wb page 14). Bring a silent reading book for after your test.

Wednesday- We will go over the words for unit 9

 Thursday/Friday- Flip folder for unit 9

 

 

Week of January 23-LA all classes

Monday- We will continue preparing for  and understanding the expectations of your up- coming research project by reading articles about the pros and cons of school uniforms and filling in the organizer. * Bring your manila folder to class each day.

Tuesday-- Grammar Music as a warmup. Come to class prepared to tell me your topic for research. I will hand  out and explain the rubric for the project and we will finish up school uniform articles.

Wednesday- Thursday- We will go to the computer lab to print our articles.

Friday- We will be in the lab one more day to take a health survey (you may have done this already in another class),You also can finish printing and start highlighting.

This is all the time you will have at school to print articles.  Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to highlighting and filling out the organizer. Presentations and project folders collected Wednesday.You may want to or need to work at home.

Tuesday - I will introduce unit 2 words for Rev It Up

Wednesday/Thursday- The class will make a " Flip Folder ".( I will show a model and provide the materials)

Friday- Students will complete a workbook page and silent read when done.

Week of January 16-all LA classes

We are beginning our 3 week research unit. Period 1  and 2 will be in the library for a lesson on Tuesday.(How to use Cobb Virtual Library) Periods 4 and 5 will go to the library on Wednesday for the same lesson

We will reviewand/or learn how to paraphrase and how to avoid plagurism on the day your class is not in the media center. Even if you had this in elementary school or in another class this year, you hopefully will learn something new.

On Wednesday the entire school will take the state writing assessment. It is just practice for 6th and 7th grade but yours will be graded by me! Bring a blue or black pen, as well as a few pencils.

Thursday and Friday we will practice paraphrasing together and in groups.

 

Literacy Apps

Welcome, to my new reading class. I sometimes do my blog for the entire week or sometimes , by the day. Even if you see a whole week at a time, it is a good idea to check the blog daily because I sometimes add, delete, or edit assignments and /or due dates.

On Tuesday, we will go over the class requirements and do a getting to know you activity. Here is my syllabus for the 9 weeks- no need to have signed but you should print it and keep in the reading section of your binder.

Basic requirements- 1. I do not do AR points for this class, but students are required to keep up with their reading log and have it signed. The log will be checked at 41/2 and 9 weeks for  525 pages. 2. Silent reading will be done on most but not all Fridays. Students should bring a reading book everyday, in case assignments or assessments are finished early.

Wednesday- Go to media center for book checkout. Finish getting to know you activity

Thursday- pun. idiom activity

Friday- silent read/finishcomic  Bring your Rev It Up book to class . You may leave the book in my room.

 

Week of January 9-All LA classes

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and vacation.

Tuesday- Just for fun- we will vote on what "overused" phrases and words of 2011 should be considered cliches. I will share words that have been added to the 2011 dictionary. We will do music grammar for a review since you all are probably a little "rusty" from break!!! If time , I will read some quirky and funny news stories that took place last year!

Wednesday-Friday- We will do a mini-literature unit using the  story and tape- "All American Slurp".

 Thursday- compare/contrast organizer and sentences(group work).

Friday there will be a minor "writing " assessment to check understanding of the story-cracker/cookie activity (if time) after quiz.

 

Here is the syllabus for the remainder of the year to show what we will study. No need to have signed, but print and put in the VIP section of your binder.
