January 30 - February 3: Literacy Applications

This week in Lit Apps we will be beginning our study of Rev It Up Chapter 8 Vocabulary.  Our Rev It Up Test will be next Tuesday, February 7.  We will also be continuing to read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.

January 30 - February 3: Language Arts

We have just finished our grammar study focusing on complements and will be beginning the largest unit of the year.  The unit covers research and the ultimate goal is to compose a strong research paper.  The research paper will be focused on a specific, well-known person (either present or past) who has had to perservere and has made an impact on society in one way or another.  Prior to beginning the composition of the research paper, we will be covering all of the elements of proper research to gather information.

***Please make sure to have at least 30 4x6 index cards by Thursday***

MONDAY:

Homework: Get 4x6 notecards by Thursday

TUESDAY:

  • Journal
  • Begin reviewing research PPT using guided notes

WEDNESDAY:

1)  Find a source with valid information about your person            

2)  Create a source card (If you are on Cobb Virtual Library, the citation is at the bottom of the article. If you aren't, you must copy the URL (web address) at the top of the page and paste it on www.bibme.org )

3)  Print out the entire article.  We will compile the notes on the note cards in class tomorrow

This week in Literacy Apps we will be continuing to get our Freak the Mighty journals set up and beginning the book! Please remember that you can certainly purchase your own copy of Freak the Mighty, but it is NOT mandatory. I will have copies available for you to use in class.

January 17 - 20: Literacy Applications

Welcome to Literacy Applications in the Language Arts content area! This quarter in Literacy Applications we will be reading and studying the novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. You are more than welcome to purchase your own copy of the book, so that you can read at home.  However, I will have copies of the novel available for you to read in class. All of our activities for the novel will be completed in a 1-subject notebook.  Please get one as soon as possible.

You will also need your Rev It Up book.  If you have misplaced yours, Rev It Up books can be purchased from the school store for $10. 

MONDAY: No School.

TUESDAY:

  • Set up Freak the Mighty Journal
  • Complete "Kids Who Are Different" Poem

January 17 - 20: Language Arts

During this shortened week we will be accomplishing a number of activities.  Any students who haven't previously shown their "How To" demonstrations and/or videos will be able to do so on Tuesday.  This is strictly optional and can serve as extra credit toward their expository essays.  At the end of the week we will focus on direct and indirect objects.  These are not parts of speech in a sentence, but rather a word or words that have a function in the sentence.  Students having difficulty are welcome to check out some of the resources listed below in this week's schedule.  Here's our schedule:

January 10 - 13: Language Arts

Welcome Back!  I hope that you all had a a relaxing and enjoyable break!

Here is a copy of our 3rd Nine Weeks syllabus: Download LA 2012 3rd nine weeks  We will begin our unit on expository writing this week.  Expository writing is, in very simple terms, a means of explaining a topic thoroughly.  The main focus this week will be creating your own "How To" expository paper.  You will receive notes and a packet to guide you this week.  You will be asked to list steps accurately and thoroughly to teach the class how to do/create something.  Here's more information and the week's schedule:
