Medication

Parents,all medication that is in the clinic needs to be picked up by May 22,2009. This would include Asthma,Allergy,Diabetic and Over the counter medication.  Any medication that is left in clinic after that date, will be disposed of. Letters regarding disposal of medication will be going out on Thursday.

Strep Throat

This is to inform you we have had a large number of Strep Throat at Dodging. I thought you may like some information on Strep Throat.

What is Strep Throat?

It is an infection caused by a bacterium, Group A Streptococcus,  which is characterized as a sore throat. If left untreated,it may cause serious problems.

How is Strep Throat detected.

It is found through:

1. Throat culture

2. Rapid antigen strep screen

3. Rapid DNA test

Strep Throat is recognized by 1 or more of the following:

* Sore throat

* Difficulty swallowing

* Red throat with white spots or pus

* May have a fever and chills

* Swollen nodes in neck

* Headache

* Stomachache

* Some children may have ear pain

* Nausea, possible vomiting

* Decreased appetite

* Rash

* Muscle Ache

* Fatigue

If left untreated, it may result in a condition called Scarlet Fever. Scarlet Fever is characterized with fine,raised sand paper type rash on the body that is itchy and may last up to 5 days.

How is Strep Throat spread?

It is spread by close contact with droplets from nose and mouth (respiratory secretions)

Case Finding-Administrative Procedures for Strep Throat

When a school nurse suspects Sstrep Throat:

*  If one or more symptoms listed above are present, the student should be referred to a health care provider for evaluation.

Control Measures for Strep Throat

*  Aantibiotics ordered by legal Prescriber

*  After 24 hours of treatment with antibiotics the child may return to school

*  The child should not go to school or be around other children until fever free for 24 hours and is feeling well enough to participate in school activities.

*  Suggest the following:

        a. Replace toothbrush and wash pillowcase/bed linen after taking antibiotics for 24 hours

        b. Wash hands often.

Packet Going Out

For all the Diabetics,Asthma and Allergy Students that I have their iformation on file, I will be sending out new forms to be completed by your doctor.

The forms should be returned to the School Nurse when your child returns in August.

Disposal of Medication Notification letter

I will be sending out Disposal of Medication Notification letters the second week of May.  All medication should be picked up no later than by the end of the day on May 23,2008. Medication left after that day will be disposed of. I know medication can be very expensive,so please pick up your medication,I can't leave any medication in the clinic over the summer.

You may pick up medication any time between 9:00am to 4:15pm.

Medication

Reminder:

1. All medication needs to come to school/clinic in its own container.

2. All medication needs to be brought to front office/clinic by an adult.

3. All prescription medication needs to have students name on the precription bottle.

4. I have had parents from other countries bring in medication from their country to give. I am unable to give any medication that comes from other countries.
