I hope all students are off to a great year! In the eighth grade, we have been testing with the Cognative Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The results from those tests should be back by mid-November. Mr. Snell provided the students with peppermints during testing and a free ice cream sandwich to the students with perfect testing attendance. According to Eric Jensen, in his book, Brain Compatible Strategies the smell of peppermint can affect attention and mood.
On October 7, 2008 all eighth grade students met Dr.Judy Romanchuk, director of the International Baccaluareate Program from Campbell High School. Dr. Romanchuck presented information to the students on six Cobb County School District Magnet Programs. The magnet schools provide an advance course of study in specific areas while earning a college preparatory diploma. The application period for these schools begins now and the deadline for submitting an application is December 5, 2008. The flyer with specific school information will be sent home with eighth grade students report cards.
The school year is off and running full of exciting new challenges and opportunities for our eighth graders! As parents, you can support your student by having him/her put everything in one place the night before and make sure they get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Organization is the key to middle school. Ask your student, every night, to look at their agenda and discuss the best and the worst events of the day. Adolescents need lots of love and attention from their parents/guardians and discussing the day's events helps open the line of communication.
Our superintendent, Mr. Fred Sanderson, wants parents and students to look at information from the Nestle Very Best In Youth Program at www.nestle-verybestinyouth.com. The program honors 13 to 18 years old who demonstrate good citizenship, a strong academic record and have made a special contribution to school, church or the community. The entry form must be completed by the student and submitted by November 20, 2008 to the address listed on the website. Good luck!
Eighth grade testing dates for September are:
September 17-19, 2008 Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

The Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) is a group administered ability test measuring the students' ability in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal symbols. The test is usually given in thirty minute segments for three days.
The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is a group administered achievement test battery that provides a comprehensive assessment of student progress compared to students nationwide. The test will be given for six days, each day will test a different subject content area.
