This week we will be introducing research and proper citation according to MLA (Modern language Association) formatting. 

If you were absent on Monday, you will be responsible for reading  and taking notes for pp 1037-1039 in the text book.

* For those students who would like to retest on the expository/persuasive test, please follow these directions and come in Thursday morning at 8:15 for the retest.

1.  Download the contract, complete activity, and bring it on Thursday signed by a parent.  Also view power point and make sure you are familiar with main points.

HOMEWORK: We have been reading the short story of Flowers for Algernon in class.  For those who are absent, you will need to check out a book and finish reading it at home as there is no on-line edition.  After completing the story (we should ALL be finished by Monday), you will begin to complete 50 points worth of activities from teh choice board below.  It does not matter which activities you chose, as long as it adds up to at least 50 pts.  You must show me 25 completed points by Tuesday.  All 50 pt assignments are due Friday, January 27th.  There will be a grade reduction for each day it is late without excused absence.  The people going on the chorus trip should turn theirs in Wednesday or Monday (I know you will not be working on it over the weekend, so Wednesday is better!).

There will be a small test over the book on Wednesday; we will be watching the movie Thursday and Friday to be able to compare/contrast the two. (RL.8.7. Analyze the extent to which a filmed or live production of a story or drama stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the director or actors.)

Homework Monday: Study Clauses: in class, we began our persuasive paper w/ partner.  If you are absent, check the crate for info--final due WED!

Tuesday: Study comma and cap rules

Wed: *Bring a #2 pencil and blue or black ink pen and PAPER to class Thursday and Friday for PRACTICE WRITING ASSESSMENT. This will be a TEST grade for the persuasive unit.

Thursday: Study brushstrokes; Remember to bring a pen to class Friday for the final copy. **If you are absent Thursday or Friday, it is YOUR responsibility to make up your writing before the holiday break. **Remember that tomorrow is Incentive Free Seating at lunch..If you have turned in all work, you sit wherever you want!!!

PLEASE look at Pinnacle to see if you're missing any assignments.  If you are, bring it to silent work lunch to complete.  This is YOUR responsibility!

Mom and Dad---We Want Candy!!

We will be starting out candy bar pesusasive papers next week, and we need two or three bags of the snack sized candies per class.  If you would like to volunteer to send in a pack of either Kit-Kats or Skittles, please do!  I will communicate to each class when we have enough for their project.  We will need the candy by Friday, Dec. 9th!  Thank you for making our persuasive project a success!

Monday: No Homework

Thursday: Compose 4 sentences and identify clauses:

1. Complex using an adverb clause

2. Complex using an adjective clause

3. Write a sentence using a noun clause as the subject

4. Write a compound sentence

The children are rewarded and given "money" to buy the things they need in a gift card  instead of cash, when it's available.  Gift cards are awarded for things such as good grade dinners, need-new-shoes month, trips to the movie, paint their room, new sheets, etc. Therefore, the best way to give to Calvary Children's Home is a Gift Card Drive. Donations can be in any denomination and for any place the 8th graders really love.

All of my classes are asked to give a gift card to Long Horn Steak House.  You may begin to bring the gift cards in as early as Friday, December 2.  Thank you for thinking of those less fortunate.  Happy Holidays!

Friday, November 18: Third chapter of your memory book is due.  Underline/highlight AND INDENTIFY  required grammatical elements listed below.

Chapter 3(or third chapter of your choice): Due October 28:  *Due date extended to November 18th

*Begin three (3) sentences with an adverb phrase (prepositional phrase that tells how, when, where, to what extent)

* Begin two (2) complex sentences with an adverb clause (these start with subordinating conjunctions)

* Include Two (2) complex sentences containing either a subordinating conjunction or adjective clause (following a noun using mostly relative pronouns)

* Include 3 compound sentences using a comma/conjunction or semicolon

*Include your choice of two: simile, metaphor, personification OR you may choose an extended metaphor throughout the paragraph or entire chapter*see “pages” on my blog for examples of extended metaphors. The extended metaphor would take the place of the figurative language.    *Include at least 3 vocabulary words from lessons 1-4. 

*****Make sure you underline and identify each of these elements in the margin of your paper!!
